What Will the Singularity Feel Like?
If we’re facing a technological revolution, what will the Singularity feel like? The Singularity is the point in the future when man will no longer be able to depend on himself alone, but will have to work with sophisticated computers that can help him overcome any problems he faces. Some authors question the nearness of the Singularity. But, others see it as a positive development.
This technological breakthrough is a great boon to humanity, as it means that scientific research will be accelerated and bold new ideas will be created. When machines reach general intelligence, they may never stop improving. Ultimately, it will be up to us to decide whether or not we want to work with the machines. In the meantime, we can only speculate. If we live long enough to reach the Singularity, we’ll find ourselves surrounded by technological wonders that will make us feel human again.
A second possibility is that AIs will replace humans. The first superhuman artificial intelligence will be humanoid robots or software programs. This AI would have a much higher ability to solve problems than humans. The AI could even be able to share data more directly than humans, creating a global network of super-intelligences that dwarf human intelligence. Robinson explores the future of civilization after the singularity.
The Singularity might be a sudden event, or a gradual process. There is no set beginning or inflection point for the Singularity, but it will certainly affect everyone in some way or another. While the term “singularity” is usually used in the context of a black hole, it could also apply to a Singularity. It has an event horizon – a point where human understanding of the implications of the Singularity breaks down.
